Whether you've been transferred to Kitchener from Anger Management Ottawa or the impetus came from you wanting a change of pace, adjusting to a new job in a new city can be very stressful, especially if you were very invested in your old job. To keep you from racking up expensive therapist's bills or phone bills for calls to your pals in the first few weeks after your move, follow our advice on how to have a happy job transition.
Step 1: Arrange Everything Beforehand
In order to have a stress free job transition, it's absolutely essential that your new job and your new home be lined up before you even arrive. Paying two mortgages in Toronto and Kitchener while temporarily unemployed is a recipe for ulcers. Take a job and home search trip before committing to the move if you have to. The devil's in the details, so make sure you know things like your new supervisor's phone number and the date and time you're expected to start.
Step 2: Have a Going Away Party
Before opening up a new chapter of your life you need to wrap up the old one. Hand in your notice with plenty of time to spare. Finish all open projects or cases, and take the time to say goodbye to each of your co-workers. If the staff at Naturopathy Toronto haven't planned a going away party, have your own. Invite your favorite coworkers out to dinner or drinks to let them know they're appreciated.
Step 3: Be the Model Employee
Show up a little early on your first day in case you have a some trouble finding the right place the first time. Be polite and energetic with your new employees. Make sure to say "hi" to everyone. Bring personal items to make your desk or office feel like home. Do everything your boss asks of you with a smile on your face (within reason. Don't replace his sheet metal brake for him if you're just supposed to be his file clerk). Don't be afraid to learn from anyone who can help you get settled in.
Step 4: Invite Yourself to Lunch
Having a good relationship with the other employees in your office is a big part of making your new job feel like home. Take every opportunity to chat with your coworkers. Discover common interests (perhaps you once had the same Mississauga orthodontist) and never miss an opportunity to socialize. Don't wait for an invitation, just follow the crowd.
