When people are putting up their home for sale in Georgetown, Ontario in preparation for moving, even if it is just down the street, they usually take this opportunity to get rid of the things they have discovered they don't really need. Everyone has attics, closets, basements, and crawl spaces full of things they never use anymore. Rather than carting it all to your new place with you and allowing it to waste space there too, why not give it to someone who really wants it? Yard sales and donation boxes are two ways to do this.
Yard sales are probably the easiest way to get rid of things you don't want. All you have to so is cart your unwanted things onto the lawn or into the garage and put up a sign announcing they're for sale. People will then come by and take all your old dollhouses and too-small ski equipment off your hands. You probably won't sell everything, but you'll sell enough to make space and generate a nice little nest egg that you can use to help set up your new place.
There are two important things to remember when holding a yard sale: the first is that you need to advertise, because people cannot help you empty out your Toronto real estate if they don't know you're having a sale. Community radio bulletins, websites, newspaper ads, and good old fashioned posters on telephone poles work best. The second thing is that you need to price things realistically. You will never get more than half of what you paid for any given item at a yard sale, and you should be willing to negotiate on price.
So what do you do when the yard sale is over and you still have too much stuff to fit into your new Prince Edward Island real estate? You find a charity donation box and get rid of the rest. Charities like the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Salvation Army, and the SPCA often run thrift stores that operate on donations. Boxes will be located outside the store and if you have a lot of stuff, they may even come and pick it up from your house. You will not only be getting rid of your junk, but also helping charity.
Charity shops will not accept everything, however. Anything that is broken should be thrown out or recycled, as it is no good to anyone. Often soft items like bedding, sofas, mattresses, and pillows are not wanted because of the risk of spreading bed bugs. Your Brampton realtors may advise you to give these items away to family who know your home is clean. The best items for thrift shops are good used clothes, housewares such as dishes and chairs, and books.
